ABOUT US
TILOS is a partnership of faculty from University of California, San Diego, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, National University, University of Pennsylvania, University of Texas at Austin, and Yale University.
TILOS will pioneer learning-enabled optimizations that transform chip design, robotics, communication networks, and other domains vital to our nation’s health, prosperity, and welfare. Foundational research will pursue five main pillars:
- Bridging discrete and continuous optimization.
- Distributed, parallel, and federated optimization.
- Optimization on manifolds.
- Dynamic decisions under uncertainty.
- Nonconvex optimization in deep learning.
STATEMENT OF VALUES
CROSS – DISCIPLINARY
We are a community of cross-disciplinary scholarship, creativity, and curiosity, valuing knowledge, technology advancement, and professional development.
INTEGRITY
We are a community of integrity and character, valuing honor, honesty, and addressing real societal needs and grand challenges.
INCLUSIVE
We are an inclusive community of diverse perspectives, valuing different viewpoints and thinking styles.
Faster computer chip design. Wireless networks with greater energy efficiency. Self-driving cars that interact better with pedestrians and with one another. These are among the advances expected to emerge from a new institute led by the University of California San Diego that is focused on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and optimization. The institute for Learning-enabled Optimization at Scale, or TILOS, is funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation. The Institute is housed at the Halicioglu Data Science Institute (HDSI), UC San Diego’s hub for data science and artificial intelligence.
